Why Packaging Is a Purchasing Decision, Not a Detail
The same pebble can arrive in a dozen different packages, and the choice moves more than convenience: ocean freight is charged per container, so any packing that wastes box volume raises the freight component of every tonne you buy. Unloading time at your warehouse, breakage, moisture and even how quickly your retail customers can resell the material all trace back to the packing line.
Treat packing as a specification, exactly like grading and color. A quotation without a packing configuration is incomplete — ask for bag type, bag weight, bags per container, pallet arrangement and gross weight before you compare prices.
20 kg Woven Bags: The Default for Distribution
Standard 20 kg polypropylene woven bags are the workhorse of the decorative stone trade. They are the cheapest packing per tonne, they can be handled by hand at every stage of the chain, and they move directly from container to wholesale shelf. A fully loaded 20 GP container of 20 kg bags holds roughly 1,200–1,300 bags depending on grading and bag dimensions.
For most wholesale distributors, 20 kg bags are the right default: labor-efficient at the factory, flexible at the destination, and familiar to landscape contractors who buy by the pallet or the piece. Specify a bag weight tolerance (±1–2% is common) and stitch quality in the purchase confirmation.
1 Tonne Jumbo Bags: Volume Efficiency for Project Supply
FIBC jumbo bags reduce bagging labor and packaging material per tonne, which is why project suppliers and municipal contractors often prefer them for large, single-material volumes. Fewer units also means faster loading counts and fewer bag-to-bag weight discrepancies to audit.
The trade-off is handling: jumbo bags need a forklift or telehandler at destination, they cannot be moved by hand once delivered, and partially used bags are awkward to reseal and store. Jumbo bags suit sites with machinery and high consumption; they are a poor fit for resale to small contractors unless you repack.
Palletized, Shrink-Wrapped Bags: Paying for Unloading Speed
Palletizing 20 kg bags and shrink-wrapping them adds pallet cost and wastes container volume — palletized loads typically carry noticeably less weight per container than loose-stowed bags. What you buy back is speed and cleanliness: a crew with a pallet jack unloads a palletized container in a fraction of the time, with no broken pallets of loose bags to restack.
Palletized packing makes sense for retail chains, garden centers and distributors with high labor costs, and for markets where forklift access is guaranteed. If you palletize, discuss pallet type with your supplier: plastic pallets avoid ISPM-15 heat-treatment documentation entirely, which simplifies customs clearance.
Repacking and Warehouse Handling for Resale
Many importers buy in 20 kg or jumbo bags and repack into smaller retail bags under their own brand. If repacking is your model, tell the supplier at inquiry stage: factory-side decisions such as bag stitching style, moisture content after washing and grading consistency at the bag level will determine how smoothly your repacking line runs.
In the warehouse, keep every material separated by batch, label each pallet with the batch or production date, and store bags away from direct ground contact and standing water. Colored pebbles — especially white — can pick up dust and stains in poor storage, and a mixed batch is almost impossible to sell back as a graded product.
How to Specify Packing in a Purchase Confirmation
Write the packing clause with the same precision as the product clause: bag material (new PP woven), net weight per bag and tolerance, bags per pallet and per container, pallet type, shrink-wrap, and labeling language including your barcode if the bags go straight to retail. Attach the agreed loading plan as an annex.
Finally, ask for pre-loading photos of the packed and palletized goods. Packing problems — underweight bags, torn weaves, collapsed pallet stacks — are visible before the container is sealed and invisible after it arrives. The loading plan plus photos is the cheapest quality control you will ever get.
